The French Territory of Afars and Issas became the country of Djibouti in 1977.Hassan Gouled APIDON was named president and served until 1999, which led to unrest in the country because the Afars believed that the government was very Issa led, so in 2001, when the fighting ended in a peace treaty, they held an election and Ismail Omar GUELLEH was elected president. He is currently in his third term as president.
Djibouti's location serves an important part in it's economy. It's location, on the northeast edge of Africa, serves as a trade port for shipments between the Middle East, Asia, East Africa, and Europe.
